Photos carry weight. A single image can influence a claim decision, compliance review, legal strategy, or security response. For that reason, image authentication has become an increasingly important control in professional environments.
Historically, images were largely accepted at face value, especially when they appeared clear, detailed, and emotionally neutral. That assumption is becoming harder to defend.
Manipulated and AI-generated images are no longer rare or easy to detect. Cybersecurity firm DeepStrike estimates that online deepfakes increased from roughly 500,000 in 2023 to approximately 8 million in 2025, representing growth approaching 1,500%. 1. Run a Reverse Image Search
Begin with a reverse image search using a reputable search engine or verification tool.
A reverse image search allows the image itself to be uploaded or pasted into a search engine. The tool then scans the internet for visually similar matches to determine whether the image has appeared elsewhere online.
The goal is to identify prior use. When conducting a reverse image search, consider the following questions:
- Has this image been published before?
- Is it connected to a different event, date, or location?
- Has it appeared in unrelated news stories, websites, or claims?
A common fraud tactic involves recycling legitimate images from prior incidents and presenting them as new evidence. A reverse image search can quickly identify obvious reuse or inconsistencies in timeline and context.
2. Evaluate the Context
In legitimate professional situations, images are rarely submitted without background information.
Consider:
- Who provided the image?
- Is the source clearly identified?
- Is there supporting documentation?
- Do the details in the caption match what is visible in the image?
Images that are emotionally charged or lack clear sourcing deserve closer review. In professional environments, valid evidence typically comes with documentation and a traceable chain of communication.
If the context is unclear or incomplete, clarification should be requested before the image is relied upon in a decision.
3. Scan for Visual Irregularities, But Don’t Rely on Them
Common red flags can include:
- Distorted hands or limbs
- Warped or unreadable background text
- Shadows or reflections that don’t match
- Lighting or skin tones that look overly smooth or artificial
These issues can still indicate manipulation. However, they are no longer reliable on their own.
Studies show that people are only slightly better than chance at identifying AI-generated images. At the same time, generative tools continue to improve, reducing the visual errors that once made fake images easier to spot.
Visual review should be treated as an initial screen, not a final conclusion.
4. Review Metadata
If the original image file is available, review its metadata. Metadata is background information stored within a file. It can include details such as:
- The date the image was created
- The device used to capture it
- Whether editing software was used
- When the file was last modified
This information can help confirm whether the image timeline aligns with the reported events. For example, a creation date that conflicts with the stated date of loss may require further explanation.
That said, metadata can be removed or altered. Its absence does not prove manipulation, and its presence does not guarantee authenticity.
5. Escalate When the Stakes Are High
If an image affects a financial, legal, or reputational decision, verification should move beyond a basic checklist and involve additional oversight.
Depending on the circumstances, escalation may include:
- Securing the original, uncompressed file directly from the source
- Requesting additional images to confirm timing, location, and sequence
- Comparing the image against prior submissions, claim history, or known reference points
- Cross-checking details against independent documentation
- Involving a supervisor, Special Investigations Unit (SIU), IT security, or a digital forensic specialist
In higher-exposure matters, escalation may also require formal documentation of verification steps, preservation of digital evidence, and consultation with legal counsel.
The purpose is proportional review. As the consequence of a decision increases, so should the level of verification.
At that stage, image authentication becomes part of structured risk management, not just file handling.
Where Image Authentication is Headed
In claims environments, images have always carried evidentiary weight. What is changing is the level of risk attached to accepting them without verification.
As generative AI tools become more accessible, image review can no longer rely solely on adjuster experience or visual instinct. Carriers are beginning to treat image authentication the same way they treat other high-risk claim factors, through defined procedures, documentation, and escalation thresholds.
That may mean incorporating reverse image searches at intake, flagging inconsistencies earlier in the claim lifecycle, or formalizing when a file routes to SIU or forensic review.
When verification becomes part of standard workflow rather than an exception, decision-making becomes more consistent, exposure is reduced, and the file stands up better under scrutiny.
